The symposium aimed at informing researchers from countries outside of Japan how the traditional Chinese medicine has changed in the 1000 years since its introduction into Japan to the modern Kampo herbal medicines used today. The proceedings show pharmacologists and phytotherapists how research taking place in modern Kampo medicine is of the same scientific standards as for Western medicine. Kampo has a basis in modern science and must be distinguished from folk-medicine. Japanese doctors who prescribe Kampo medicines have all graduated from Western-style medical schools before continuing with Kampo medicine training. These proceedings will also greatly assist doctors and researchers involved with Kampo medicines by informing them of the latest research (undertaken at the same level as other fields of medicine, using modern knowledge and equipment) accompanied by recent research results and applications.
