内容説明
This textual biography provides an account of the creative processes of Hardy's work and the conflict he encountered between wanting to make a living from his writing and wanting to tell the truth about the world as he saw it. From the initial ideal conception of a novel or story in his mind he drifted further as the manuscript neared completion. He was always dissatisfied with what he wrote and until he was 80 he revised his work at every opportunity. This continual reshaping of his fiction is discussed in order to analyze the developments in each novel. The book integrates a description of his dealings with magazine editors, publishers, and printers and their effect on his work, with a study of the development of the texts of his novels and stories from first draft to final revised edition.
