The changes that are taking place in the USSR since Gorbachev came to power have renewed the interest of the West in Soviet politics. This study attempts to fill a gap in Western literature on the Soviet Union by adopting a composite view that embraces all facets of the system and its society - one that offers a better understanding of the complex interrelationship between the operation of the Soviet system and its military power. It integrates the diverse factors of ideology, economy and Russian history that make the Soviet system and society what it is today. It relies as much as possible on original Soviet sources to reflect the underlying thought and motivations that determine Soviet policies and attitudes.
