Description and Table of Contents
Description
This bilingual essay collection represents the first major introduction to the works of Martin Walser, one of Germany's most prominent writers, to be published in the United States. Contributors to this volume include Walser's German publisher, Siegfried Unseld, translator Leila Vennewitz, editor Thomas Beckermann, critic Peter Hamm, and twelve scholars from Germany and the U.S. who focus on Walser's novels, plays, and various aspects of his work. The volume concludes with a speech by Walser on the nature of reading and the function of literature, Ueber den Umgang mit Literatur.
Table of Contents
Contents: Critical approaches to Walser's novels, plays, and other writings. Essays on the relationship between literature and film, translation, Walser's concept of literary criticism, and the reception of his works in the USSR. In contrast to three previous essay collections on Walser published in Germany, this one presents Walser research from German and from U.S. scholars.
