More and more industrial and economic activities are now carried out with the help of computers. Owing to its integrative character, informatics has turned out to be the decisive basic science in laying the foundations for the effective use of computer technology in all areas. It is especially owing to the microcomputer that information-processing technology has entered all areas of life and can solve tasks on an undreamt-of scale. Software development has been speeded up by the use of scientific methods, techniques and aids of informatics such as more effective programming languages, software engineering and documentation. As a result, informatics has gained in importance as a basic subject matter in secondary schools, colleges and universities. This dictionary has been compiled with all these developments and trends in mind and by making use of the appropriate international scientific literature in the original languages, especially books and journals in English, Russian, German and French, dealing with the state of the art and further development of informatics and applied computer science and engineering.
It covers the general fundamentals of informatics such as computer architecture; hardware and software components; systems engineering; interactive and batch processing; fundamentals of software development (programming) such as conceptual formulation, program implementation, data acquisition and data management; hardware components such as circuits, memories, input/output devices, interfaces, data acquisition terminals, sensors and actuators; transmission media and network controllers; system reliability; applications of informatics in industry and economics such as CIM, CAD, CAM, artificial intelligence, expert systems and databases. The alphanumerical organisation of the entries enables the reader to translate from any one to any other of the four featured languages, by using the indexes. This four-language reference book has been developed particularly for specialized scientists and engineers working in informatics. It should be of value to lecturers and students at universities, technical and engineering colleges, and other schools of higher education where informatics is being studied, and will also serve as a useful tool for translators and documentalists.
