This book covers basic geometrical and physical optics at degree level. It aims to show how the properties of light fit into the general scheme of physics and how it is used in many of the instruments that are among the basic tools of science. There are discussions on the properties of electromagnetic waves in the optical sphere, comparing them with other regions of the spectrum, the geometrical optics model, the propagation of waves (interference and diffraction), polarization, image formation and optical instruments, including interferometres and spectroscopes. The chapters on laser light and optical fibres show the applications of the ideas developed earlier in the book. In this revised edition, there is an update on the speed of light, which is no longer a measured quantity but an internationally defined number of metres per second and further information on the detection of radiation.
