Many people think that changes in fish stocks are caused mainly by intensive fishing but scarcely publicized are the multitude of other influences at work. This book gives a review of existing knowledge and includes original work by the authors, scientists of wide experience in fisheries and oceanography. It summarizes and evaluates various methods of fishery resource assessment and factors affecting recruitment fluctuations. It also reviews the effects of ocean environmental factors and the behaviour of fish in relation to fishing gears as this can lead to improvement in gear and tactical approaches to fishing. Final chapters describe the problems associated with full utilization of marine fishery resources.
