内容説明

This volume is a structured collection of specialist research reports which together present an international perspective on the developing field of aquaculture. As in previous volumes in the series, contributions examine the most recent advances and developments in both the scientific and production-based areas of the industry but a particular feature of Volume V is the greater emphasis on some of the wider issues including water resources and socio-economic concerns. This reflects a growing awareness amongst planners, development agencies and industry leaders that aquaculture needs to be reviewed in its broadest context to ensure that development along productive and sustainable paths is not achieved at the cost of social dislocation and environmental damage. Although there is increased focus on Africa and Asia, this book offers balanced regional coverage reflecting the continuing theme in aquaculture that problems and solutions particular to one location or species will often be translocated elsewhere.

内容説明

It is a tribute to the vigour of research and development in aquaculture that we are able, in a relatively short time, to provide readers with a second volume in this series, which has such a diversity of high calibre research and developments to report. That the first volume was so well received has been a source of great satisfaction to the editors and supported their conviction as to the need for links to join the research laboratory to the fish farm by making current research available to a wider range of potential users. In this volume. we have changed the balance somewhat towards more specialised subject areas. We make no apology for this. as the modern aquaculture professional is concerned with a wide range of specialisms within the broader content of management and production, and there is every need to present such work in an acceptable format. Furthermore many of these specialised topics have a significance right across the range of production, are often economically criticaL and are therefore of con- siderable and widespread importance. The first contribution. by Dr Derek Robertson, manager of the Institute of Aquaculture's Howietoun Fish Farm, covers just such a subject.

内容説明

The success of the previous volumes in this series attests to the buoyancy of the current expansion of the aquaculture industry, and the importance which it is beginning to achieve in the rural economies of many developed countries as well as those less favoured. In the last volume, emphasis was given to certain specialist areas which had become more important as the industry had acquired a more sophisti- cated scientific base. This emphasis is continued, but in each of the chapters of the present volume there are, we believe, many data of general significance to the farmer and the project manager as well as to the pro- fessional aquaculture scientist. David Alderman, of the English Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Laboratories, at Weymouth, Dorset, provides a very detailed and deeply researched review of therapy of fish diseases. This subject is import- ant in environmental and human health terms as well as in relation to the fish themselves, and is an area where all farmers, and their professional veterinary advisers, require considerable knowledge if they are to ensure the reputation of the industry and its produce.

目次

1. Fisheries Chemotherapy: A Review.- 2. Egg Production in the Rainbow Trout.- 3. Solar Ultraviolet Radiation: A Potential Environmental Hazard in the Cultivation of Farmed Finfish.- 4. Acid Rain: Implications for the Farming of Salmonids.- 5. Reproductive Biology and the Hatchery Rearing of Tilapia Eggs and Fry.
