Analysing technological competition between US, European and Japanese firms since the 1950s, the author presents a wide ranging but detailed consideration of evidence on the changing pattern of international trade and production in the major industrialized countries and on the technological advantages of their firms. The establishment of innovative competitive advantages, achieved through the gradual accumulation of capital and technology, is shown to be critical to the competitive success of international manufacturing groups.
