内容説明

This work offers a analysis of the relationship between society and the environment, following the theories developed by the author in previous books. He extends the concept of "ecology" to refer to any analysis which looks at connections between social systems and the surrounding environment. He traces the development of the notion of "environment" from the medieval idea - which encompassed both human and natural systems - to our modern definition that separates human systems from the external environment. With this modern outlook in mind, the author presents a comprehensive catalogue of society's reactions to environmental problems. He investigates the spheres of the economy, law, science, politics, religion and education to show how these different areas relate to environmental issues. This work critically examines claims which are central to our society - the claims to modernity and rationality. It should interest third year students and researchers in sociology and anthropology, students and academics in political analysis and law.
