Description and Table of Contents
Description
Written in 1886, this novel examines the phenomenon of Americans in Europe, a theme that Henry James was to explore in the next two decades. It is also a love story and a valediction to youth when Colville resigns his editorship of a midwestern newspaper and returns to Florence, scene of his youthful passion. Tony Tanner has written several books on American literature including "The Reign of Wonder", "City of Words" and "Scenes of Nature, Signs of Men".
