内容説明

This work is the outcome of research undertaken at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies in the area of Balkan security. The Balkans has always been an area of historic and ethnic divisions and one of strategic interest for the Soviet Union. The only successful challenges to Moscow's rule in East Europe occurred there and whilst these posed a problem for the Warsaw Pact's Southern Tier, the Kremlin ultimately managed to contain them. Working from this background, this group of essays analyzes the defence policies of the Warsaw Pact Southern Tier in the Balkans as well as the military posture of Yugoslavia and Albania. As political allegiances change in the Balkans and the future of local regimes looks more and more precarious, the book concentrates on capabilities rather than assumed intentions, seeking to highlight the military realities of the region.
