This work looks at the significance of the vast archive of cuneiform tablets discovered by a French archaeological expedition to Mari, the capital of a kingdom on the Middle Euphrates in Syria. They reveal Mesopotamia, when the Israelites were in their earliest, formative stage. The archives shed light on the early phases of Israelite socio-history and are a prime extra-biblical source for this period as they reflect a West Semitic population analogous to the so-called Patriarchs.
