The Society of Educational Officers is the professional association for education officers working for local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is the only professional, non-political organization which can speak with authority on all aspects of the education service managed by local education authorities. This book traces the history of the Society from its foundation to 1988. It provides an analysis of the development and activities of this education interest group, including its relationship with the Department of Education and Science and other governmental agencies; its role as a voice defending the public education service, its provision of services for its members, its promotional activities, and its comparative status as a professional interest group.
