Carbon fibres can be produced from a multitude of materials - gaseous, liquid, and solid - by a variety of techniques, and serve a wide range of purposes. By chemically modifying these fibres, their range of application can be extended even further, for example by incorporation of elements other than carbon to produce element-containing carbon fibres. This monograph describes the modes of production and characterization of carbon fibress as well as their applications, such as catalysts, ion-exchangers, sorbents and, above all, as constituents of composites in various high-tech materials.
