The case studies in this book reveal some of the dilemmas faced by African women in rural areas and the barriers to their economic freedom. Women are often caught between their responsibilities, the resources available to them and their limited freedom to undertake new activities. The book examines the problems in food processing in Ghana and Sierra Leone, in access to land in the Ivory Coast and Senegal, in marketing in Nigeria and South Africa, and in income generating activities all over the region.
