内容説明
The editor is happy to present volume 30, a Jubilee volume, to the read- ers of "Progress in Drug Research". In the 27 years of its existence, this series of monographs has published more than three hundred suvey- articles covering almost all aspects of drug research, thus providing the opportunity of using the monographs for encyclopedic information. It is the editor's hope that the new volume, which contains 12 contribu- tions, will also be interesting and useful, both to those who are actively engaged in research and to those who wish to keep abreast of the latest developments and cannot afford the time to read all the numerous spe- cific puplications. The 12 contributions of volume 30 are particulary concerned with im- munopharmacology, progesterone receptors, brain neurotransmitters, hypertension, 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors, beta blockade, myo- cardial infarction, confirmation analysis malaria, tissue dwelling hel- minth parasites, oral anti diabetics; various problems of drug dis- covery are also dealt with. In addition, this volume contains a subject index, an alphabetical article index and also an author and subject in- dex for all the volumes so far puplished.
On the occasion of this Jubilee Volume, the editor would like to take the opportunity of thanking not only the authors who were prepared to undertake the task of writing the present extensive surveys, but also to express his gratitute to all the previous authors who were also pre- pared to share their vast knowledge and experience with the readers.

内容説明
Volume 31 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains 13 articles, a sub- ject index, an index for all articles that have been published so far in this series of monographs, as well as an author and subject index for all 31 volumes. The reviews in this volume are particularly concerned with the therapy of helminth diseases, with pyramidinones as biody- namic agents, and with quinolones which are of interest in the treat- ment of infections. For a deeper understanding of the pharmacokinet- ic actions of modem drugs, the articles on cooperative binding of drug molecules to DNA, on in vitro models for the study of antibiotic activi- ties, on inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system, on GAB A-drug in- teractions, and on the mechanism of action of anxiolytic drugs provide a wealth offacts and new findings. The pharmacology of caffeine is re- viewed from the viewpoint of its role in combination with other phy- siologically active substances, and the chapter on high resolution nuc- lear magnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrates the importance of this method in the development of new drugs. Finally, the article on light and dark touches border problems of the therapy of psychic dis- orders. With these contributions, the authors aim to summarize latest achieve- ments in important and actual fields of drug research. Researchers who are actively engaged in the same or in similar fields of research are sure to benefit from these efforts.

内容説明
In the first years of the existence of this series of monographs, during the so-called "Golden Age" of drug research, the majority of the pa- pers published were mainly concerned with the traditional domains of drug research, namely chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and pre- clinical investigations. The series' aim was to give coverage to impor- tant areas of research, to introduce new active substances with thera- peutic potential and to call attention to unsolved problems. This objective has not changed. The table of contents of the present volume makes evident, however, that the search for new medicines has become increasingly complex, and additional, new disciplines have entered the research arena. The series now includes reviews on bio- chemical, biological, immunological, physiological and medicinal aspects of drug research. Researchers actively engaged in the various scientific fields forming the entity of drug research can benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience of the respective authors, and will be assisted in their endeavour to discover new pharmaceutical agents. Those simply wanting to keep abreast of new developments in the complex, multi-discipline science can turn to the "Progress in Drug Research" volumes as an almost encyclopaedic source of information without having to consult the innumerable original publications. Volume 32 contains 12 reviews, a subject index, an index for the close to 400 articles published in the series so far, and an author and titles index for all 32 volumes.

内容説明
Today's drug research is an extremely complex process which, apart from chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and preclinical trials, in- cludes a variety of sciences such as biotechnology, biochemistry, im- munology, physics, biology and even computer sciences. The Table of Contents of the present volume demonstrates this situation and makes it evident that the individual researcher cannot possibly hope to keep abreast of all aspects of modern drug research. In this re- spect, the series of monographs "Progress in Drug Research" pro- vides valuable help and assistance. Those who simply wish to remain informed of the latest trends and developments in drug research can use the 34 volumes so far available as a source of almost encyclo- pedic character. Researchers actively engaged in the various scientific fields forming the entity of drug research can benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience of the respective authors, and they will be assisted in their endeavour to discover new pharmaceutical agents. Moreover, the extensive bibliographies of the individual reviews provide an invaluable overview of the literature most pertinent to today's drug research.
I should like to thank all the authors for their willingness to prepare the reviews and for sharing their insights and experience with the readers. Thanks are also due to Mrs L. Koechlin, H.-P. Thiir and A. Gomm of Birkhauser Publishers for their valuable help in the pre- paration of this volume.

Volume 36 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains 5 articles and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the connec- tion with the previous volumes. While all articles deal with some of the topical aspects of drug research, the contribution by Robert R. Ruffolo et al. on "Drug receptors and control of the cardiovas- cular system: Recent advances" is indeed in its own right a mono- graphic presentation of this important domain. The remaining four reviews provide an overview of the work in- volved in the search for new and better medicines, with a focus on chemical, pharmacological, toxicological, biological, biochemical and molecular modeling studies. In the 31 years this series has existed, the Editor has enjoyed the help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the in- dividual articles, and, last but not least, the reviewers have all con- tributed greatly to the success of PDR. Although many comments received have been favorable, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze and to reconsider the current position and the direction of such a series.
So far, it has been the Editor's aim to help spread informa- tion on the vast domain of drug research, and to provide the reader with a tool helping him or her to keep abreast of the latest develop- ments and trends.

Volume 47 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains eight reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the connection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with inotropic steroids, with chemokines and their involvement in a wide range of inflam matory diseases, with the subclassification and nomenclature of ul- and Uz-adrenoceptors, with Chinese traditional medicine, with drug targets in the molecular pathogenesis of asthma, with cytokines and their therapeutic application in immunosuppression and immunostimulation, with alter native medicine and with the potential use of calcium blockers in psy chiatry. These reviews and the quotations of original articles provide the reader with valuable information on several new developments in the world-wide search for new and better medicines. In 1959, when the Editor started this series of monographs, it was his intention to help disseminate informa tion on the vast and fast growing domain of drug research. Already at that time,it was not possible to follow the major individual publications in this field, and the reader was thereby provided with a tool to keep abreast of the latest developments and trends. This goal remained unchanged over the last 37 years, and I believe that the reviews in PDR are useful to the non-specialist who can obtain an overview of a particular field of drug research in a relatively short time.

内容説明
This series was founded in 1959, and its focus has shifted from medicinal chemistry to a much wider scope. It now encompasses all fields concerned with the development of therapeutic drugs and the elucidation of their mechanisms of action, reflecting the increasingly complex nature of modern drugs research. Invited authors write reviews on the following fields: biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, immunology, pharmacy, toxicology, pharmacology, and clinical aspects. The books are linked by indexes in each volume, forming an almost encyclopaedic work.
