Description

In 1987, Labour Prime Minister Bob Hawke made an election undertaking that no Australian child need be living in poverty in 1990. What did this mean? Since the Henderson Report in the early 1970s first raised public awareness of the level of poverty in affluent Australia, there has been little progress in reducing the numbers of those who live without adequate means to support themselves. Why? Do we understand the problem? Do we lack the will to tackle it? This volume examines the reasons for the existence of poverty and the policy issues which must be addressed if the underlying causes of poverty are to be eliminated. The book surveys the current data, presents the issues in an accessible manner and challenges the policy makers.
