Description

An understanding of children's clothes enables a greater appreciation of the child's position in society. In showing the relationships of children's clothes both to adult fashions and to social and economic trends, this book also provides an interpretation of the past. Topics, such as the design, materials and manufacture, changing cost and variety of clothing are covered. This illustrated history of children's clothes from the 18th century to the present day, using material drawn from sources including surviving garments, photograph albums, paintings, novels, letters and diaries, to examine the social and philosophical influences on fashion. It is designed for collectors, historians and museum staff and the illustrations include extant costumes, advertisements and fashion plates. Clare Rose is the former Keeper of Textiles at the York Castle Museum. She is now a freelance costume researcher and lecturer.
