A history of the American civil rights movement. It describes the crusades of leaders like Martin Luther King Jr, Baynard Rustin, Stokely Carmichael and Malcolm X as well as the efforts of ordinary people like Fannie Lou Hamer. Begining with the Brown decision and the Montgomery bus boycott in the 1950s, the author narrates the full story of the civil rights movement - the dramatic sit-ins, freedom rides, marches and great legislative achievements of the 1960s and the decline of the movement in the urban riots and disputes over community control and affirmative action in the late 1960s and 1970s. Robert Weisbrot offers his explanation as to why the movement foundered and explores its legacy of new possibilties for black political and cultural expression.
