Not only are infections a source of immediate morbidity to the mother, the fetus and the newborn, certain infectious agents may actually produce long term or lasting effects on the unborn child in the form of malformations. This book provides the practising clinician with precise guidelines for the management of these infections in the pregnant or breast-feeding patient. Featuring contributions from well- known investigators who have extensive actual experience treating obstetrical patients with bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infections, the manual focuses on providing the clinician with all the information needed to effectively deal with a wide range of both common and rare infectious diseases. The text concentrates on obstetric infections rather than infectious diseases of the female, and covers herpes-simplex, hepatitis, cytomegalic virus and human papilloma virus in pregnancy. Sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, lymphogranuloma, syphilis, human immunodeficiency virus and scabies are also examined. The work includes microflora of the genital tract, acute chorioamnionitis, soft tissue infection, postpartum endometritis and group B streptococcal infection.
