It explains the National Insurance system and the new Income Support programme. It covers sickness benefit, maternity pay, entitlements during trade disputes, benefits in the event of industrial acidents or disease, housing benefit, family credit and short-time work. Sue Ward looks at these areas in relation to full and part-time workers, trainees and the self-employed; the book should be of benefit to Trade Unionists, advice workers and libraries. Sue Ward has worked as a Trade Union Researcher, a negotiator on pensions for the GMWU, and an adviser on pensions to the TUC. She is now a freelance writer and broadcaster on various aspects of social welfare and has written other books, including "The Essential Guide to Pensions", "Getting the Message Across", "The A-Z of Meetings" and "Organizing Things".
