Description

The number of elderly in the United Kingdom, as in many other countries, continues to grow steadily, and some kind of cancer is the certified cause of death in at least one in seven of them. Clearly, those who care for these patients (whether geriatricians, oncologists, general physicians, surgeons or general practitioners) need to know the manifestations, the common problems and the treatment options. Moreover, to secure what everyone wants (the best and most appropriate treatment for each individual, according to his or her age, needs, hopes and circumstances), collaboration between two or more disciplines is usually essential. By combining an account of the present state of knowledge of cancer in the elderly with an overview of treatment, this book aims to present to a wide spectrum of disciplines both the more scientific and the more clinical aspects of the subject.
