This monetary history of modern France between 1897-1984 consists of chapters covering specific sub-periods, from the gold standard period of 1897-1914 through to the expansion with inflation phase of 1968-73. Each chapter gives an account of the economic situation and policy decisions as a background to a more detailed analysis of monetary and financial developments. The work focuses on the range of factors affecting policy, economic and monetary developments in each sub-period, paying attention to movements in the counterparts of the money stock, to the determinants of bank reserves and to private sector portfolio decisions. The book concludes with a lengthy statistical appendix, which sets out important new quarterly and monthly statistical series for the money stock and its counterparts.
