This work is intended as a contribution to the history of teacher education and as a contribution to contemporary debate on teacher training. It was initially conceived as a centenary celebration of the opening of the first day training colleges in 1890, a landmark in the historical development of university involvement in teacher education. The first 5 chapters of the text describe a growth of teacher training in the universities of England and Wales. Two specialist historical chapters follow on Scotland and Northern Ireland. The remainder of the book is thematic with chapters looking at a number of specialist interests which make an important impact on present-day practice in university teacher education. The final chapter analyzes the present state of teacher education in the universities and is an important statement about professional theory and practice as teacher educators learn to live with the 1990s. In many respects the 1890s are not that far away and it is to be hoped that this edited collection will serve as an inspiration for the future as well as a memorial to the pioneers of the profession.
