内容説明

The work of Rom Harre has played part in breaking the mould of orthodox philosophy of science and of social psychology. The essays presented here explore issues raised by Harre on a range of topics in the philosophy of the natural and human sciences. Among the issues discussed contemporary realist philosophy of science are: whether relativism is compatible with realism; whether science converges on the truth; and whether words or things have essences. Among the subjects discussed in contemporary philosophy of the human sciences are: the explanatory propriety of pleading ignorance of the causes of one's actions; the relation between the new person and the old subject paradigms in social psychology; the compatibility between realism and social constructionism; the interaction between the practical and the expressive aspects of social life; the nature of the self; and the relation between hysteria, belief and magic.
