Description

In 1989 the health issues to hit the headlines were foodborne listeriosis and leukaemia associated with radiation, although these were extremely rare causes of death. Between December 1989 and January 1990 the most severe influenza epidemic in 15 years accounted for at least 25,000 deaths in England and Wales, but attracted little public and press attention. This annual report covers all the issues, developments and events to affect the nation's health in 1989 and the first half of 1990. It reports an overall improvement in health during the decade 1980-89, although the major burden of preventable illness remains and the disparities in health between social groups and regions continues. Life expectation has increased by 2 per cent to 72.4 years for men and 78.1 years for women and in 1989 the infant mortality figure was the lowest ever recorded. But it is not all good news. Alcohol consumption (and the ill health associated with it) has increased steadily since 1982 and an increase in drug abuse is also a cause for grave concern.
