内容説明

At a time when the Western European states are taking more responsibility for their own defence, this book looks at the effect of such developments on Anglo-American relations. Politicians in both London and Washington assert that the old "special relationship" between Britain and America is very much alive and well. But security issues within Europe are in a state of flux and it is important to analyze how the context of Anglo-American relations is changing. The book deals with the developments within the Western alliance that policymakers will face in the 1990s: the growing Europeanization of defence in NATO; the revitalization of the Western European Union; the development of the more common procurement policies within NATO; the reactions of the allies to the success of arms control negotiations and the future of the alliance in an era when Soviet perestroika is posing unprecedented challenges and opportunities in East-West relations. Can NATO survive the redefinition of the traditional Soviet threat? This volume will be of interest to the academic specialist and will also introduce the non-specialist to the nature of current debates within the Western Alliance.
