Inositol metabolism has special importance in plant biology. This text provides methods and approaches for analyzing the many guises of inositol and its various roles in plant growth and development. It details the general metabolic and physiologic effects of inositol and inositol lipids, including their biosynthesis and degradation, and their possible roles in conjunction with calcium and calcium-regulated protein kinases as second messengers in transmembrane signal transduction.
