Description and Table of Contents
Description
Derived from the ESPRIT project MULTOS, the book describes the main issues involved in the design of an advanced system for filing and retrieval of multimedia documents. Five distinct aspects of such a system are discussed: document modelling aspects including conceptual, logical and layout structures; architectural aspects covering client-server architectures to support office filing activity; operational aspects such as query optimization, document type handling, document management; storage aspects including magnetic and optical storage management; user interfaces aspects including advanced tools to support query formulation and document presentation. Also discussed are advanced techniques to support document retrieval based on content and in particular on image content, as well as knowledge-based document classification techniques. In conclusion, the design of a system which offers the above features is described and a pilot application is exemplified. Main Features: - flexible office filing system architecture - multimedia document modelling - knowledge-based document classification - content-based multimedia document retrieval
