This report completes one of the most extensive reviews of shopping behaviour and shopping policy ever carried out in the UK. Nearly 4,000 people were interviewed to evaluate the shopping centre improvement schemes carried out under the Urban Programme in the West Midlands. The results of this survey have national significance. National policy and recent trends in inner city shopping areas are followed by the West Midlands programme with full details of the research project. The West Midlands results are considered in relation to other innner city areas in Britain. The repoert should be of interest to retailers, local authority planners, and researchers.
