内容説明

The period since the Second World War has seen a transformation in the level of scientific, and lately public, interest in blackflies, the bloodsucking insects which form the small family Simuliidae among the true flies or Deptera. Relatively obscure on a world scale until the beginning of the 1950's, these flies have since bounded on to the entomological stage to such effect that the word blackfly - and even the scientific word onchocerciasis for the human disease of "river blindness" carried by these flies in parts of the tropical world - are well on the way to becoming household names. This book is a synthesis of knowledge about the natural history of flies of the family Simuliidae available up to June 1989, and is primarily meant for those whose work brings them into contact with blackflies but who have neither the need, nor the time, nor perhaps the inclination, to plunge deeply into the scattered outpourings of the specialists. The book is referenced with over 1200 bibliographic citations in order to provide a starting point for those who are newcomers to blackflies and need an entree to the subject of simuliid biology at fairly high level - students of aquatic biology, for example, or those taking courses involving blackflies as carriers of parasites and diseases. The author introduces topics and terms which specialists would take for granted with a few words of scene-setting explanation. The names of describers of organisms, it should be noted, have been rigidly excluded, on the grounds that this is not a taxonomic reference work.
