The 29 papers in this volume originate from the 1989 Helsinki Working Conference and represent the achievements, approaches and ideas of 45 experts from 13 countries pertaining to the updating and promotion of more effective vocational education and training of professionals and end-users in the field of informatics. The importance of human relations, communications and mutual understanding; of the understanding of human information processing and learning styles; of the individual's and the team's capability of assessing themselves as well as others have been pointed out in many of the views presented. The reports on the discussions that followed the presentations represent a valuable addition to the subjects covered by the papers and are an indication of the trends and prospects expressed by the experts participating in the Working Conference.
