ポンピドー・センターがパリにオープンした、１９７７年のその日以来、美術館の建築においては、類型的なものは造られなくなった。美術館は、資産を保管しているところという考え方は、今ではほとんどなくなって、今日の美術館は、美術館以上のものになったのである。この本は、グァスメイ・セガールが修復を手懸けた、ニューヨークのグゲンハイム・ミュージアムから、ジェームズ・スターリンが手懸けた、スタットガートにあるスタッツギャラリーまで、Ｉ．Ｍ．ペイが、ピラミッド型のものを付け加えたルーブルから、リチャード・メイヤーの、アトランタにある優雅なハイ・ミュージアムに至るまでの、２０世紀後半の美術館の設計を全て調査したものを、挿絵入りで紹介したものである。
