Recent years have seen extensive research into the development of new materials. An essential aspect of that research is to ensure that the materials are suited to industrial use, in which elements in industrial constructions are interconnected by joins. Therefore the material must provide a simple method of joining which is simple, reliable and - increasingly important in today's economic climate - cost-effective. It is this area which was addressed by the international conference held in Montreal, Canada, 23-25 July 1990, published in these proceedings Advances in Joining Newer Structural Materials. The book examines many aspects of joining from welding and brazing to bonding, and covers ceramics, plastics, composites and new metallic materials. Overall it provides a valuable account of the latest developments in the technology of joining new materials, providing an essential reference source. The information serves two major purposes: firstly, to assist engineers in their goal of constantly improving the reliability, safety and economics of construction; secondly, to emphasise to researchers the necessity of considering joining as a vital element in their research of new materials.
