Description and Table of Contents

Description

Professor Hugh Lloyd-Jones was the Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford for 29 years. During this time he earned a reputation as one of the foremost scholars of the classics, and in particular of Greek literature. His publications include an Oxford Classical Text of "Menander's Dyscolus", "Blood for the Ghosts" and "Classical Survivals". He has prepared, together with Nigel Watson, the new Oxford Classical Text of "Sophocles Fabulae" and the accompanying commentary on the text of Sophocles, "Sophoclea". This collection of 77 papers by Lloyd-Jones is being published to commemorate his retirement. The subjects covered by the essays reflect Lloyd-Jones' wide interest in the field of Greek literature: Homer, tragedy, lyric poetry, comedy and mythology. Some of the more interesting papers were originally published in foreign journals and have not been widely accessible until now. The work will be of interest to scholars and students of classical language and literature.
