Description and Table of Contents

Description

Sir Hugh Lloyd-Jones had been Regius Professor of Greek in the University of Oxford for 29 years when he retired from the post in September 1989. During this time he earned a worldwide reputation as a scholar of the classics, in particular in the field of Greek literature. His publications include "Blood for the Ghosts" and "The Justice of Zeus". He has also prepared, together with Nigel Wilson, the new Oxford Classical text of "Sophoclis Fabulae" and the accompanying book of notes "Sophoclea". This collection of 38 papers by Lloyd-Jones is being published to commemorate his retirement. The subjects covered reflect his interest in the fields of Greek comedy, Hellenistic literature, Greek religion and Greek culture in general. Some of the papers were originally published in foreign journals and appear in translation for the first time.
