Description and Table of Contents
Description
This guide to the monuments of India has been divided culturally rather than geographically, with a companion volume on Moslem and British Imperial India. The first part of the book consists a series of chapters of background information - the land and its people, historical perspective, social structure, priests and pilgrims and theory of the temple to enable the visitor to place the sites and monuments in their historical, cultural and religious context. The second part is a gazetteer of principal sites, monuments and related museums arranged into six regions, each with a detailed map, brief historical survey and summary of regional styles in art and architecture. The six regions include North India, the Himalayan valleys, East India, West India, the Deccan and South India.
