The studies presented in this volume explore various aspects of religiousinfluence: the vitality of popular religion, the effect of prayeron narrative patterns, the impact of the theme of the Passion on themystics, and the intellectual's relation to this faith. Two contributionson Chaucer examine aesthetics in his religious tales, and the interplayof aesthetics and moral problems in Troilus, and there arestudies of the theology and imaginative texture of Piers Plowman.Explorations of the theological framework of mystery plays and theProtestant influence on Tudor moralities illustrate the influenceof religious ideology on `popular' drama.
