Two years after comet Halley was intensely studied during its passage through the inner solar system a new, more detailed picture of comets is emerging through the wealth of data. This volume records the continuing process of scientific discussion regarding the mystery of comets. Approximately one third of the papers are dedicated to various aspects of the nucleus which is in the centre of the cometary phenomenon, but which is hidden from earthly observations. The remaining sections discuss cometary aeronomy, gas and dust emissions and plasma effects associated with the interactions with cometary environs. The authors represent a large number of countries and organizations, most of them having played prominent roles in space missions to comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner.
