Description

Providing the concepts needed for a rational and unified view of supramolecular chemistry, this book looks at the photochemistry of supramolecular species as the interface between light and matter and as being at the crossroads of chemistry, physics and biology. Commencing with a review of the principles of molecular photochemistry, the authors define the field of supramolecular chemistry, emphasizing the peculiar properties of supramolecular species. The book contains surveys of a number of important topics, including energy and electron transfer in covalently-linked multicomponent systems, photoinduced conformational changes in supramolecular species, photochemical and photophysical processes in electron donor-acceptor complexes, ion pairs, and host-guest systems and photochemical and photophysical behaviour of new types of supermolecules like cage-type complexes, catenanes, and rotaxanes. The relationships between natural and artificial systems are discussed and the role played by model supramolecular species to elucidate the mechanisms of photobiological processes underlined. The development of supramolecular photochemistry towards the design of artificial photochemical molecular devices is also covered in detail.
