The acceleration of European integration in the drive to create a single European market by the end of 1992 has focused increasing attention on the impact that the single market will have on the functioning of regional governments and strategies in promoting economic development. Drawing from the analysis of data collected over an eighteen year period on Emilia-Romagna and other regions in Italy, the study is organized in ten chapters that analyze diverse aspects of the region's political institutions, political life and culture, economic performance over the past decade vis-a-vis other regions in Italy and in the Community at large, and ties with external actors in the form of national and Community actors.
