内容説明

Despite a growing awareness of the problem within the profession, in politics and among the general public, little research has been done into the nature of violence against social workers. In this new book, Dan Norris discusses the explanations for the incidence of and the nature of violence against social workers. He surveys and comments on the existing literature on violence, the problems of defining it, and discusses the research which has been done into its circumstances and causes. The attitudes of social workers themselves - the reluctance to report even serious incidents, the phenomenon of "self-blame", and the response of their managers - are examined in the results of a specially conducted survey. Social workers' place in society and the way in which they function is central to the whole issue. "Violence against Social Workers" looks at the effect of how they work, their attitudes to clients and the problems caused by poor or undirected management and insufficient resources and information. The book also includes an important profile of present practice in dealing with violence against social workers, based on questionnaires sent to directors of social services and chief probation officers. Finally, the author explores in detail methods of controlling and reducing violence and the implications which such approaches may have for social work practice and administration at all levels in the future. The many possible dangers arising from new strategies and technologies which appear to reduce the problem are identified, along with the legal responsibilities of social work management.
