内容説明

This book considers the elections of 1945-1966 in outline and those since 1970 more fully. It then tries to draw from this survey more general lessons about the British political system, including the various party groupings, the electoral systems, campaigns and voting behaviour. The period 1970-1987 offers the evidence required to analyze the ways in which the British political system has developed since the war. At the beginning the post-war consensus was still in place, events from 1970 to 1979 showed two parties with a largely similar approach to Britain's problems, and a similar inability to find solutions. As far as electoral politics are concerned, there were some surprises, such as the rise of the Liberals and the Nationalist parties, and some familiar features, particularly the dominance of social class as the main influence on people's voting.
