内容説明

Foxon's 1975/6 Lyell lectures examine the commercial side of Pope's literary career. They describe his negotiations with booksellers, his success with the Homer translations, his independent ventures in bookselling and show how the presentation of his work evolved through successive editions. The text is illustrated with reproductions from editions of Pope's work, and from his manuscripts, many taking the form of comparative illustrations showing the same text as printed in different editions, which illuminate the ways in which compositorial practices affected the transmission of the texts. There are also examples of Pope's proofs, corrected in his own hand, title-pages and decorations used in his editions, plates, decorated initials and frontispieces.
