The last few years have witnessed an increase in awareness of the importance of events subsequent to transcriptional initiation in terms of the regulation and control of gene expression. In particular, the development of recombinant DNA techniques has provided powerful new tools with which to study the molecular basis of control and regulation at all levels. This guide discusses the post-transcriptional processes controlling and regulating gene expression in eucaryotes and procaryotes. The topics covered include transcriptional (anti)termination, mRNA stability, anti-sense RNA, translational control and translational fidelity. An understanding of these mechanisms is an essential requirement for the optimization of gene expression in various biotechnological applications.
