This comprehensive survey of British portrait photography features the work of 150 eminent photographers including Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar, Man Ray, Bill Brandt, Edward Steichen and Helmut Newton. The selection contains photographs produced using a wide range of photographic processes, including daguerreotypes, salted paper prints, ambrotypes, platinum prints and stereo daguerreotypes all faithfully reproduced in colour according to their original appearance. There is an introductory essay on the origins and development of the Gallery's photographic collection, and short biographies of sitters and photographers. This accompanies an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in October 1989.
