内容説明
This is a photofacsimile edition of the quarto of "The Second Part of Henry the Fourth", prepared by Thomas L. Berger. The quarto, which was printed by Valentine Simmes in 1600, exists in two issues, the second with a cancel. It is generally accepted that this edition was set from Shakespeare's foul papers by a single compositor. The reason for the cancel (which contains an entire scene missing from the first issue) is the subject of debate among students of Shakespeare's text. There are also considerable differences between the quarto text and that in the 1623 First Folio; these too are subjects about which scholars are currently in disagreement. Censorship, adaptation for the theatre and revision have been proposed to explain the state of the text. These questions are reviewed in the introduction to this edition, which also contains a full list of press-variants between copies of the quarto, together with other bibliographical information of primary importance. In addition to the photofacsimile of a complete copy of the second issue, there is an appendix which contains photofacsimiles of those pages in the first issue which were subsequently cancelled.
