The laboratory rat remains the most widely used species for the testing of potentially carcinogenic agents in vivo, and reliable information on the classification and nature of spontaneous and induced tumours in this species is therefore essential. The extensive use of the rat for this purpose has also led to a great increase in knowledge regarding its tumours since the publication of the first edition of this work. Most of the chapters in this volume have therefore been completely rewritten and a few new ones added. Each chapter deals with a particular organ or tissue, and each describes the normal structure, the morphology and biology of tumours (including the histological classification), spontaneous tumours, induction, non-neoplastic lesions and comparative aspects. Copious micrographs are provided in each chapter to help clarify the descriptions supplied by the text.
