The Fifth International Symposium on Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy and its Applications was held in Varese, Italy, on 16-21 September 1990. The Symposium maintained its reputation for attracting participants from a large number of different countries. The continuing expansion of the field is amply demonstrated by the fact that these Proceedings are considerably larger than the 1988 Proceedings. The range of subjects covered has also widened considerably. The Symposium was divided into the following sections: Physics applications of rare atoms; Laser ionisation mechanisms - spectroscopy; Atomic, molecular and ion sources; Molecular RIS; atomic RIS - Rydberg states; Environmental trace analysis; Biological and medical applications; State selected chemistry; New laser sources and techniques; Ultra-high resolution and isotopic selectivity; and Surface and bulk analysis. These proceedings will be of great interest to researchers in government, academic and industrial research laboratories in physics, chemistry, materials science and earth and environmental sciences. They will also be an invaluable addition to libraries and collections.
